Hurricane Sandy’s impact on DFA

Dance Film Association   November 1st, 2012

Dear Dance Films Association community,

For those who faced Hurricane Sandy, we send our best wishes and hope everyone is dry, safe, and in high spirits. Dance Films Association’s offices are out of power as we’re south of 34th Street, but it looks like we’ll be back next week and will work remotely until then. Announcements regarding the 2013 Dance on Camera Festival slated for the beginning of November have also been pushed back until next week. And be on the lookout in the next few days for more information about our town hall members meeting scheduled for November 28. We hope to respond to inquiries as best as we can in the interim. Next week we plan to proceed with our programs as scheduled. Monday night, November 5th, DFA and Focus Features co-present a free, private screening of Anna Karenina directed by Joe Wright followed by a talk back with the film’s choreographer, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Screening starts at 7pm, at the NYIT Auditorium at 1871 Broadway between 61st and 62nd Streets. You can RSVP by clicking here.  On Wednesday, November 7 we’ll be at Dixon Place for Beyond the Stage: Moving Men on Screen, starting at 7:30. They’ll be a dance performance followed by many short dance films. You can get tickets on their website, only $10.00 for DFA with this discount code “DFAMember10”. Tickets available by clicking here. Impacted quite directly, we’d liken to help the downtown arts community emerge from the hurricane. A great resource, Fourth Arts Block listed many ways to volunteer on their website. Our friends at the Solar 1 Green Energy, Arts, and Education Center on the East River desperately need your help this Friday and Saturday from 10:00-4:00. For two summers in a row we’ve co-presented outdoor screenings with Solar 1 and are saddened by news of the damage caused by Sandy. We’re spreading the word and hope our help and your help can ensure more screenings in the future! Email dina@solar1.org if you can lend a hand. Lastly, if you have a story to share, Dance/NYC seeks your testimonial. Write to Lacey Althouse at lalthouse@dancenyc.org and join the conversation on Twitter @DanceNYC #sandydance. Stay strong New Yorkers! We hope to see you next week and promise to rekindle movement and life with dance film in our beloved, bustling city! Warmly, Dance Films Association  Christy, Brighid, Liz, Jennifer, Caterina, Melissa, and the Board of Directors
